“Freedom” Through Compliance and Conformity

November 1, 2011

Today is the launch of Orrin Woodward’s LIFE business. While he and his TEAM organization call it a brand-new business, it’s really just the same thing that they’ve been doing for nearly two decades. Instead of selling purple juice concentrate or vitamins, energy drinks and home-care products, LIFE members are selling re-branded TEAM tools in an internal-consumption pyramid scheme.

LIFE followers write about re-igniting freedom across America with a business opportunity selling CDs, books and seminars focusing on the 8F’s: Fitness, Finances, Following, Faith, Freedom, Family, Friends and Fun. Within this business opportunity, LIFE proponents say that one can retire from a job, bring the spouse home from work, buy whatever you want, whenever you want, and have the luxury of time.

When I look at LIFE’s Policies and Procedures, compensation plan, and calendar of events documents, however, I see a shocking lack of freedom, time and money to be made.

As previously pointed out in Section 9.2 of the P&P, a LIFE member’s business can be taken away at a whim’s notice by the LIFE company. Furthermore, such “disciplinary” action may be taken due to the actions of a LIFE member’s family, regardless of whether or not those family members are in the business:

3.22 – Actions of Household Members or Affiliated Parties
If any member of a Member’s immediate family or any individual residing with a Member engages in any activity which, if performed by the Member, would violate any provision of the Agreement, such activity will be deemed a violation by the Member and LIFE may take disciplinary action against the Member pursuant to the Policies and Procedures.

Talk about guilt by association. So, suppose a family member is against LIFE, what’s a LIFE member going to do? Sounds to me like the LIFE member will have to sever ties to that family member.

Consider the 8F’s when looking through the prism of LIFE:

  • Fitness: Drink $140/month cases of MonaVie juice.
  • Family: Your new family is your LIFE family.
  • Friends: Your friends only exist in LIFE.
  • Fun: Attending seminars, meetings and Major Conferences are considered your new fun.
  • Following: The only people you follow are Orrin Woodward, the LIFE Policy Council members, and whoever they cart out on stage at Major Functions.
  • Faith: You will be strongly encouraged to become a Christian.
  • Finances: You will spend hundreds of dollars of month trying to make money in a LIFE business whose odds are stacked against you.
  • Freedom: The freedom you get from participating in LIFE is only achieved through compliance and conformity to Orrin Woodward.

Does this sound like freedom to you? In my opinion, the answer is a resounding no. Many people on this site agree with me, and they used to be faithful followers of TEAM and Orrin Woodward. What happened to them is that they saw the light and realized that Orrin Woodward is not a leadership guru but a scammer and charlatan. Analyzing the LIFE compensation plan and reading the fine print of the Policies and Procedures documents makes this crystal, one hundred percent clear.

LIFE members who don’t agree with me must heed the following stipulations in the P&P when posting a comment on this site: – Responding to Negative Posts
Do not converse with one who places a negative post against you, other independent Members, or LIFE. Report negative posts to the Company at corpsupport@the-life- Responding to such negative posts often simply fuels a discussion with someone carrying a grudge that does not hold themselves to the same high standards as LIFE, and therefore damages the reputation and goodwill of LIFE.

I’m surprised there isn’t a stipulation that prohibits LIFE members from reading negative posts in the first place. Then again, if that clause existed, it would cause Orrin Woodward and his policy council members, like Mr. Strategic Default, to be in violation of their own policies. After all, much of what they’ve written in recent weeks appears to be in response to posts and comments on this site.

Finally, if a LIFE member does choose to violate and post here, note that he or she is required to identify yourself: – Identification as an Independent LIFE Member
You must disclose your full name on all Social Media postings, and conspicuously identify yourself as an independent Member for LIFE. Anonymous postings or use of an alias is prohibited.

Don’t follow the example of Orrin Woodward and post anonymously as Qrush!

Amthrax, I have to say I laughed out loud at some of your comments.

Although I believe their P&P is flat out tyranny and is a very serious matter for anyone who (reads,99% won’t) would be foolish enough to sign their complete rights away to become a slave to LieF. I wish there would be some contract attorney’s comment on this and how they feel any judge would view such tyranny.

They tout of the Freedoms as one of their 8 F’s and this P&P shows exactly how your freedom is stripped from you. It is Hypocrisy in black-n-white! This to me is a slap in the face of what our country stands for and all those lives that have been lost in the fight for our Freedoms. Rather than a forward movement, as they say they will ‘revolutionize’ the industry, they have simply copied what other MLM’s are doing and are moving backwards and institutionalizing people. People in American Prisons have more rights and make more money working in prison than most will ever make in LieF.

There would be NO real business on the planet (because their are laws to protect) that would make an employee sign something so unconscionable. It is ONLY in the MLM industry that they get away with this where the distributors are never protected. This is mind boggling to me how they continue for decades to get away with this!

Someone NEEDS to crack down and lay some heavy laws against such tyranny! All of them tout it is ‘better’ than any Job, and how bosses control you, your time and money. As a matter a fact they say it is the ‘best opportunity’ and the only way one can get such freedom of time, and money. What a LIE.

I know Orrin would NEVER succumb to this tyranny, His track record PROVES it, and he touts.. he would never ask anyone to do something he wouldn’t do…What a LIE. He couldn’t even follow Amway’s or MV’s.. P&P and taught to break it! Dictator..plain and simple!

Orrin Woodward is a joke and so is this business. After 2 decades this is the best they could come up with?

Word on the street is that the comp plan in LIFE is basically what Amway’s comp plan was, except at a high level you can make twice as much. My understanding is that after 25% level there is a 50% level.

I think it’s important to point out that very, very few people will ever make it to that level and 50% of zero is zero.

Let’s watch them follow Amway’s suit and expand overseas……

I agree…not quite the Wal-Mart of the Internet….What a joke, their launch is…geez where’s the fireworks…you’d thought by their hype..They ARE a ‘supplier’ of other authors books and their seminars are just repeated rhetoric…that they get at huge discounts on and make the cds for pennies… then resale them internally…for massive profits! It is a way for them to copy other leaders material..then call it their own and make a killing by selling it to their ‘captive’..(slaved) audience.

I have read several comments where the FTC was mentioned and this business opportunity being reported to them. By just doing a quick search and digging through the FTC website, I found a site to submit complaints. If you read a bit about submitting a complaint, you will see that you have the option of including as much identifying information as you wish (you aren’t required to include a name or anything on the first page, but the FTC would then not be able to contact you for further information or for follow-up). Just a note, on the third page in, you need to select the type of complaint – choose other. The next page will allow you to enter “Business Opportunities”, then MLM/Pyramid Scheme.

Again, if you feel strongly about this and want to report your experiences, I would highly encourage everyone to do that (rather than suggesting others do it for you).

Thanks for the link 1millionLIfEs! I think we all need to take the time to fill out a complaint. One thing that would help nudge the FTC is volume of complaints. A handful of people complaining is not enough to really get their attention. But if everyone of us take the time, we have a better chance.

Please take the time! Think how much money we all would have saved if we had known all this info BEFORE we started. Let’s band together and try and help others keep from being taken.

1millionlifes – yes, I know what form you mean, I have submitted a complaint about my personal experience with TEAM a couple of months after I left TEAM. I encourage every ex-teamster to submit a complaint.

I really do hope a good lawyer could go over the new comp plan and the P&P. Unfortunately us Canadians don’t have as strict as laws nor do we take as much action as even the USA does when it comes to scams and pyramid schemes.

This is so sad for me, though. Every day I’m praying for my upline and my friend I met online to get out. It doesn’t look like they will, since they’re so steeped into the business. My online friend was so in love with TEAM before she kicked me off of her facebook, she even made lots of heart symbols when she gushed on how much she loved her business. As for my upline she’s all starry-eyed at the Woodward crew and always been in love with money.

Perhaps there’s a lot of fear involved in leaving LIFE/TEAM? Not sure. But I know even early on in TEAM I started to see red flags, and I never wanted to leave because I was buoyed up by the positive talk at seminar, thus giving me renewed hope – or should I say false hope. Perhaps people are staying in LIFE are afraid to leave? And if they are, what are they afraid of? Just a tough question I’d love to ask the LIFE people…

I wish the cult experts like Steve Hassan and Rick Ross and others will make a clear definition on the commercial cult. I understand it’s a relatively new trend, but it’s still a very serious trend with very serious consequences. Like the traditional political and religious cults, the new P&P shown here is very clear that they want their followers to conform to the leaders’ ideals and way of life, and this is including controlling the follower’s family and social lives, their finances, and also the way of thinking.

Sorry for the long post, but I read this post in full and am very heavy-hearted. We have a big fight on our hands.

Wow. Thank you Amthrax for an enlightening site and trying to help others see the light and break free. I ‘lost’ one of my best friends to MonaVie and now TEAM and LIFE, I miss him dearly. I still get FB posts from him and dare a call now and again, but we don’t have much to talk about. Sadly, the FB posts are ALL about Orrin Woodward. Apparently, my friend needs just two more years and he’ll spend cash on everything, on how I’ll still be working my ‘sad little office job’ and he’ll be off vacationing anywhere he chooses. I’ve felt so frustrated and helpless watching him disappear into this cult. And since I am a ‘negative’ from the begining when he started selling the juice (I am a biologist by education and my livelihood is in the science sector- I instantly questioned the juice, the ‘studies’, and tried even to explain the placebo effect to no avail), I was the first to go. And now I see why. Your post here is the first time I have a true understanding of just how brainwashed my friend is. Scary and sad.
I have a brother and his family who were sucked into a born-again Christian cult (yes, they exist too) for almost 10 years, we were powerless to help. When they finally ‘came back to real life’, it was the most joyous process, but it took time. They are still Christian, but much healthier now.
I will send my friend this web link for what good it may do and only hope that one day either he proves me completely wrong and is a rich (but, I’ll bet unhappy) bugger or comes back to realilty and to those who miss him very much.
To those of you who have found the strength to break out of this cult, I am proud of you, it looks to not have been easy based on this post.

@Angela – Keep us up-to-date with your progress on getting your friend out. Sometimes, “brainwashed” people have to find their own way out — perhaps like your brother. Once they do, be there for them, cause they’ll need it (they will think that they are failures, when in reality they were manipulated by highly experienced cons).

LIFE members are starting blogs to counter the NEW PERSON searching for TRUTH about Team LIFE. The PC’s have been encouraging their 2nd tier Leaders to start Blogs to push the “Critics” and “Lie’s” about LIFE down on a google search. They figure if they start enough blogs… NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW THIS SITE EXISTS. Sad. Really sad that the TRUTH in LIFE is misleading.

The first 24-48 hours after a new person sees the opportunity is the most critical to the overall success of growing the ‘business’. We live in a time where 95% of people google the opportunity within 24-48 hours of seeing the plan. IF they don’t read about the TRUTH… they think the opportunity ‘makes sense’ so they get in. If they read the TRUTH… they questions the person who showed them and this is the SAME reason why TEAM is called ‘Team’ and LIFE is called ‘Life’, to HIDE the TRUTH because both names are common everyday words. Tricky, yet a science. We could devote an entire post just to the first 24-48 hours….

ie: “Leaders” blogs under Claude Hamilton

  17. Vogel permalink
    November 7, 2011 4:59 pm

Oh good grief. I skimmed the blogs and watched a couple of the videos and all I could think was that these are some of the stupidest people I’ve ever witnessed. They can’t write intelligently; they can’t speak coherently; and they aren’t fit to lead anyone or anything. They keep talking about the importance of leadership, but leadership in the absence of skill is not “leadership” – it is merely “cheerleadership”. I watch the football wrap-ups on ESPN regularly and I’ve never once seen them attribute a victory to the cheerleaders. The glory goes to those with the most skills, not the biggest pom-poms.

Of course not everyone has had the opportunity to receive a good education, and my heart goes out to those people because they are not ignorant by design but typically by circumstance. But these stridently ignorant gasbags at Monavie/TEAM/LIEf are just too much too bear. They revel in their own stupidity. They are nothing more than predators looking for lost souls to exploit in order to compensate for their own glaring deficiencies.

The straw that breaks the camel’s back is hearing them invoke the Lord’s name in defense of their atrocious scam. Jesus was the antithesis of everything these charlatans stand for. If Jesus had the misfortune of being at a TEAM/LIEf meeting, you KNOW that he would be tipping over the “tools” tables and casting out the fakirs. He wouldn’t have been fawning over these PC poseurs who incite people to worship mansions and sports cars; he would be loudly denouncing them. The kingpins at Monavie/TEAM/LIEf are not shepherds — they are the wolves — and their chance of going to heaven is about as great as that of their fat worthless asses passing through the eye of a needle.

And as a closing thought for Claude Hamilton – “misunderestimate” is not a word in the English language. If one is going to take the stage and profess to be a leader, demonstrating a firm grasp of the English language should be a prerequisite. How can such a buffoon have the gall to call himself a “leader”? Wayne McNamara’s blog was even worse. The guy is in dire need of a remedial English class. As a general word of advice to all the LIEfers: (1) go easy on the exclamation points – 5 per sentence is more than ample; (2) don’t capitalize random words – like “Purpose” or “EXCELLENCE”– as though doing so gives them a different meaning; and (3) learn to teach a more compelling lesson than the one you’re currently teaching – i.e., that even an ignorant talentless a-hole can make a few bucks if he’s sufficiently committed to lying, exploitation, and bullying.

I swear to God, I would be hard pressed to refrain from crushing one of these pernicious blowhard jackals if they ever tried to lay their hooks into one of my friends or family members; and that sentiment, IMO, is a lot closer to leadership than anything the LIEfers teach. A true leader – a real shepherd – would never let the wolves get near the flock.

Bravo Vogel! I have to give you credit on two levels…first off, that you had the stomach to watch the videos and read the blogs makes you a hero ten times over!

Second, you bring up an excellent point, a leader would protect their flock from harm and I have never really thought of it that way. Well done, i usually think of everything (she says tongue in cheek)! But seriously, I think that people like Amthrax, Speak and Webelieved and other contributors to this site, are the true leaders because they could not, in good conscience, continue to take their downline on this journey to hell. THAT is the sign of a good leader, taking the collective well being of their followers into consideration and making decisions (even if unpopular) based on that. Of course that precludes that you have a conscience. You all are the TRUE leaders!!

And, Vogel, I completely agree with you about the violent reaction you have against these predators. I have been approached about a couple of other MLM type scams (seriously, do i have SUCKER written on my face?) and I had to control the visceral reaction I had to their “sales pitch” and politely, but ever so firmly, decline. I wanted to shake them and scream “OUT DEMON OUT!!”

On that note, have a lovely day y’all.

    K. Crukley~

Thanks for the info. We all know they have been trying desperately, that for years; beginning with Amway and especially now, with the LIEf. Why? They have no where else to turn. They don’t have anymore ‘outs’. They can’t change the name anymore…can’t blame the ‘negative’ truth on anyone else…they have been caught in their own trap…this is the end for them. According to them..they have ‘arrived’ at what they have always wanted, their own MLM.

If this doesn’t work…and it won’t because they have not created any better chances for success than all the other MLM’s they parasitically attached themselves to in the past…at least nothing will change…the attrition rates will probably get worse…then they will have to admit they Failed, which is something beyond their comprehension. No more hiding. I believe they will turn up the heat to hide the truth to a white hot level. They are desperately trying the same ole tactics that didn’t work for them in the past…and believe it will backfire on would fit their definition of Insanity, they so love to use.

It doesn’t matter how legit they can appear or how many attorneys they have paid to write up contracts and dictating P&P’s.. they haven’t fixed their root problem…they will have to face their past of massive destruction and fix it… or it will never go away. You can’t run and hide forever. They may convince newbies they have changed but all of us know better. There are consquences and laws to face that they believe they can elude from by their clever tactics but we all know…them included… that they WILL.. reap what they have sown… it is inevitable.

Just found quite the interesting post from Mark Huber:

Besides making me want to puke, here are some quick highlights:

“Now before I go any further, I do not want you to think I am trying to deify Orrin or come across as some fanatic that is trying to lift up Orrin to some cult-worship status. I am simply illustrating that, in the face of Orrin’s many critics, I will stand on the proverbial mountain top and say this:

Orrin and Laurie Woodward are some of the most exceptional people you could ever hope to meet in your lifetime.”

I love the fact that he specifically mentions that he is not trying to lift Orrin up to some cult-worship status. He then goes on to give Orrin the following descriptions:

    – He is one of the most exceptional people you could ever hope to meet in your lifetime
    – He is not perfect, but he stands head and shoulders above anybody else Huber has ever had the privilege to meet (ever? really?)
    – He has watched him always take the “principle-centered road” instead of the easy or “self-preservation road” (does that include stealing people’s businesses or blogging anonymously as Qrush or creating the Life policies & procedures and compensation plan with the terrible allocation of dollars?)
    – Huber has shed many tears as I saw Orrin get “stabbed in the back” by many who claimed to love him (really? or is that called finally seeing the truth of who he is?)
    – He has shown grace in situations where smaller men would show law (really? There are a lot of people who have personal experience that is counter to this)
    – He continues to sacrifice time and tremendous amounts of energy to create a business model that can do the most good for the most people possible (Huber should read Brett’s comp plan analysis and see if he still agrees. Any plan where 96% must fail and 50% of the compensation dollars goes to the top 1% doesn’t seem to do the most good for the most people possible)
    – He has shown selflessness under pressure when others have shown pride, ego and selfishness (a simple reading of Orrin’s self promotion on his daily blog posts shows this isn’t true)
    – He is a modern-day hero (I would love to hear his definition of a “hero”. Does this mean Orrin should be equated to Winston Churchill or George Washington?)
    – In many ways, the courage and character of Orrin Woodward reminds Huber of King Leonidas of Sparta in the battle of Thermopylae (It sure is hard to believe that so many people went through war on Orrin’s side in his battles against Quixtar and yet stopped following him afterward once they saw his true colors)

Also, doesn’t the Team preach that we need to listen only to those with fruit on the tree? Why should anyone listen to Huber? He may have spent 14 years with Orrin, but he has also spoken from a Team stage hundreds, if not thousands, of times and even filed bankruptcy in the process of building his business. No one has ever referred to this fact from a Team blog or on stage to my knowledge. Could it be that both he and Orrin would rather hide this fact?

Just some thoughts from my experiences with Team. All opinions are my own.
