Articles on Buying Your Way Onto the Best Seller Lists

February 27, 2013

Here are two articles about buying your way onto a bestselling book list. They given examples of recent book authors that used ResultSource, a San Diego-based marketing firm that assists authors with getting onto the coveted best sellers lists.

As I stated in a previous post, what these authors are doing is not illegal, but it’s a practice that is frowned down upon.

Blogs have been picking up this story as well:

The whole mentality of the TEAM/LIEF cult seems to put enough fear, peer pressure, influence etc. onto the members that push them to be only in complete support of the system. It absolutely amazes me how they can be so positive about Orin’s leadership and the fantastic material that they offer, but in a split second their bipolar personality can turn into a snide and hurtful defensive nonsensical ogre when asked for proof that this grand and wonderful material actually works.

It’s all about keeping the upline happy in hopes that they will continue to help you network and grow your downline, after all that is the only way to make the riches, right?

    @Frustrated

Why do you consistently misspell LIFE as LIEF, and Orrin as Orin, in your comments?

I can answer half that question. Lief is a LIE. Passive, residual, pipeline, systemetized, willable, pay now play later, do the work up front so you don’t have to later income DOES NOT EXIST in this so called business model. The Peters, Morgans, myself and others are living proof of that. We at least voluntarily walked away from this nightmare, and yet all the work we did is no longer rewarded. Passive? Pipeline? NOT! Hence the terminology LIEF.

I can’t even imagine how infuriating it would be to have your hard work ripped off. Oh yeah, its a lie all right.

All these shenanigans to game various best seller lists are laughable. I take solace in the fact that all gamed books hit rock bottom after a week or two, perhaps some a bit longer, but almost always they all seem to fade into insignificance or oblivion. So much for ego boost!

If I had a book out I would rather donate the 250k or 500k+ to Oprah’s charity, taking a chance she might read my book than give it to a book gaming outfit for results guaranteed to be fleeting (in a week or two). Surely by now these gaming “authors” should know the pony playing angle does not come with desirably long lasting results? I don’t know…it just doesn’t seem to make any sense to an average bear (but maybe it does to all knowing grand pubahs, guru’s and the like perhaps to do their blinded adherents’ $$ gravy flowing to their pockets with ease?) But any who, they all – i.e. gaming “authors” and gaming outfits – seem to be in good company after all.

…in good company after all with each other.

Ha, WSJ link explains it – guess I did put the cart in front of the horse. But …still reeks.

    Amthrax says:

“As I stated in a previous post, what these authors are doing is not illegal, but it’s a practice that is frowned down upon.”

While it may not be illegal, I believe it’s dishonest.. Forbes “quote of the day” (see below) and this quote from the Forbes article from (link from Amthrax above) says.

“Kaplan expresses significant reservations about taking part in what is essentially a laundering operation aimed at deceiving the book-buying public into believing a title is more in-demand than it is.”

Forbes, Quote of the Day:” A treasure is to be valued for it’s own sake and not for what it will buy.”~ Graham Greene

Proverbs 11:1 – A false balance [is] abomination to the LORD: but a just weight [is] his delight.

It’s amazing the understanding gained with reflection and the clarity brought by hindsight. With that clarity, things make a whole lot more sense now.

    Thanks, Amthrax for the links.

    @ I QUIT

Thank you for answering my question. In a way it was a rhetorical question since I already knew the answer (I have been reading this site for well over a year and was here when people first started using the term LIEF.) I wanted to find out if people posting the word LIEF were just mimicking what others were doing without being aware of the connotation of the word.

I believe that referring to LIFE as LIEF is a mistake. Here’s why:

    1) It’s not Obvious.

Whenever I see the word LIEF my first reaction is that it’s a typo. The fact that what was intended to be conveyed is LIE F is not obvious. Also, it detracts from the rest of the message that was written because it diverts the readers attention to a tangential issue.

    2) It’s Ironic.

This is a minor point but I decided to look up the definition of LIEF in the dictionary. Granted, it’s archaic but one definition that my dictionary gives is: dear; beloved; treasured. I doubt that this is the meaning that those who use this word intend to convey.

    3) It’s Ineffective.

I have yet to see anyone claim that they left TEAM/LIFE because the letters for the word “lie” are contained in the word “life”. If it was effective then you could switch the placement of the “T” and “M” in TEAM to get all of the vegetarians to leave TEAM/LIFE in utter disgust 🙂

    4) It’s Counterproductive

I think this is the most compelling reason not to use the word LIEF. The various search engines are going to index LIEF as LIEF and not LIFE. The ranking of the Amthrax blog for the search term LIFE will suffer as a consequence.

Did you notice that the LIFE/TEAM Guy spelled Orrin as Orin? I suspect that he didn’t want his comments to improve the ranking of Amthrax for the name Orrin (you would think that someone who goes by the handle of LIFE/TEAM Guy would know how to spell Orrin!)

Anyway, thanks for your response. I agree with your views about the TEAM/LIFE “business” but I think that there are better ways of calling attention to its deceptive claims!

@OhBeJoyful – You’ve made some excellent points about terminology. I think it’s a good idea to follow these from this point forward.

OhBeJoyful- Thank you for that well reasoned post. I wonder if we should start using the phrase “Life Training” when talking about TEAM from now on to help people that have just been shown the plan this site. Even though we were all in TEAM I guess it no longer exists. I would assume that people getting started now have no idea what in the world “TEAM” is and are all in for Life Training.

Amthrax- I don’t know if it is possible to go back and tag more posts as “Life Training” because we all know it is the same shenanigans with a different name.

  12. March 1, 2013 9:37 am

I’ve been tagging new posts with the new name. It will take some time to go back and re-tag all previous posts.

@ OhBeJoyful- Good points. As much as I will miss it I can see wisdom in using the proper terminology. Thanks for the slap!

I wonder if dropping of the TEAM name into Life Training is due to all our letters to the FTC. Guess they are hoping to confuse investigators with the difference in Life & Life Training and hoping they will not understand that only a handful of people are making all the money in Life Training and their only ‘customers’ are their distributors in “Life”.
